At a school wide mass held on Thursday, February 23, it was announced that Nylyn Oubre was chosen as St. Charles Catholic's student of the year. As everyone knows Nylyn has chosen the most rigorous curriculum St. Charles Catholic High has to offer and has excelled by making straight A's throughout her high school career. An example of one other academic achievements was being chosen as the 2005 chemistry student of the year. She has quite a list of academic achievements. She also has unquestionable character and serves as an example to all of her SCC peers and underclassmen. We all reap reap the benefits of Nylyn's involvement at SCC, she serves as a Co-captain of the Starsteppers, she is involved in theatre, our school choir, St. Joan of Arc Church's shoir, she lettered in track and is on the peer ministry/retreat team. She has participated in the Relay for Life fundraising event for cancer research every year since freshmen year. These activities are just a few of her extra-curricular activities. Nylyn was presented a plaque and a bouquet of roses.
Her accomplishments don't end there. Nylyn was also presented a certificate from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Nylyn has advanced to Finalist standing in the Achievement Scholarship competition of two thousand and six by demonstrating through outstanding performance potential for future academic success.
The National Achievement Scholarship Program was established specifically to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students and to encourage them in their pursuit of higher education. Black students who take the PSAT/NMSQT and meet other entry requirements in their junior year of high school are eligible to compete in this competition. Nylyn was notified of her semifinalists status in the fall. At the end of last month both Nylyn and St. Charles Catholic were notified that Nylyn had advanced to the Finalist status.
