Comets finish season as 3A state finalist

For the second year in a row and third time in the last 5 years, the Comet baseball team reached the state championship game but fell short of winning the state title. This time it was the Parkview Baptist Eagles who defeated the Comets 12-3 in the 3A state championship game.

The Comets defeated defending state champion Iowa 5-2 in the semifinals sending them into the finals against Parkview. Prior to that, the Comets defeated Avoyelles 10-0 in bi-district, Marksville 5-4 in the regional round, and North DeSoto 5-0 in the quarterfinals.

In the Avoyelles game, D. J. Wesley hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Comets the 10-0 win by the mercy rule. Donovan Duffy pitched all 5 innnings to get the win for the Comets.

In the Marksville game the Comets had a tough battle on their hands and needed to go 8 innings to pick up the win. Nick Reine's two out bases loaded single won it for the Comets. Marc Picciola picked up the win on the mound pitching in relief of starter Donovan Duffy.

In the North Desoto game Picciola pitched a complete game one hit shutout to lead the Comets. With the win the Comets earned their 3 straight state tournament berth.

In the Iowa game the Comets jumped out in front 1-0 in the first and added 2 more in the third inning. Iowa cut the lead to 3-1 and would get no closer as the Comets stretched the lead to 5-1 before the Jackets added one run in hte 7th. Picciola pitched another complete game allowing only 4 hits in 7 innings.
