St. Paul The Comets opened the 2001 season on the road in Covington against the 5-A Wolves. Todd Babin and Jamall Singleton scored touchdown runs with Matt Boucvalt and Daress Nicholas catching touchdown passes. The win kept the Comets ranked in the top ten in the Power Point Rankings and set-up a big game the following week at E. D. White. E. D. White In one of the most anticipated games of the season, the Comets began to silence some of their critics with a convincing 30-13 win over the E. D. White Cardinals on the road. EDW was able to trim the lead to 23-13, but Jason Waguespack put the icing on the cake with a late touchdown on a 22 yard option run. The win set-up a another big game for the following week with the St. James Wildcats scheduled to visit Dupuy stadium. St. James The SCC-St. James game was one
of the most thrilling victories in Comet football history. The game was
tied at 20-20 at the end of regulation which sent the game into overtime.

on the Comets offensive possession in overtime period. Waguespack then
booted the PAT and the Comets lead 27-20. The Wildcats responded scoring
on a 4th and goal from the 7 yard line. But Comet defensive back John
Howard broke up the two point pass play in the corner of the endzone which
gave the Comets an unbelievable 27-26 win. During regulation the game
was hard fought with several lead changes. The Comet offense turned
the ball over 4 times on the Comet end of the field and the defense was
able to halt the Wildcats high powered wing-t enough times to secure the
win. Trailing 12-7 late in the first half the Comets marched 96
yards on 10 plays with Waguespack connecting with John Bordelon on a 23
yard slant pass. The two point try failed and the Comets lead 13-12 at the
break. The Wildcats regained the lead 20-13 in the third quarter. But a

game and send it into overtime. Click below to view highlights of the

The Comets tasted defeat
for the first time at the hands of a fired up Donaldsonville team. Early
in the game the Comets squandered a great scoring opportunity after
the defense forced and recovered a fumble inside the Tigers 10 yards line.
Three plays netted no yards and a short field goal sailed wide. It was a a
sign of things to come at the Comets committed mental and physical mistakes
throughout the contest. The Comets lead 14-7 at the half but a
second half collapse followed. Donaldsonville dominated the 3rd
quarter scoring 14 points while the Comets were limited to a field
goal.. St. Thomas Aquinas Win number eight did not
come easy for the Comets as they had to fight off a pesky AA St. Thomas
Aquinas 34-32.. The Comets squandered two touchdown leads twice in the
game and never let St. Thomas off the hook. The Comet defense which had
been burned on several big touchdown plays held off the Falcon two point
try in the last few seconds to preserve the win.The Comets lead 16-7 at
halftime. Early in the 3rd quarter the Comets added to that lead when
Waguespack kicked a 51 yard field goal. The Comets went on top 19-7. But
on the Falcons first play from scrimmage after the kickoff. to narrow lead

St. Thomas answered once again Lutcher
From start to finish the St
Charles -Lutcher game offered everything it was supposed to- solid
football teams battling in the 10-AAA title game looking to maintain high
rankings in the AAA power ratings and garner momentum heading into the
playoffs next week. In the fourth quarter as the fog moved in Dupuy
stadium it was the Comets who took control of the game with 14 unanswered
points and a defense that became more and more dominant as the game wound
to a close. The result was a convincing 24-7 win for the Comets who
claimed their first district title since 1992. The
win against Lutcher also had special meaning for Comet head coach Frank
Monica as it was his 100th career high school win. Ironically it was
against the school that gave him his first win and 36 out of his 100
victories. The Bulldogs grabbed an early 7-0 lead. Late
in the first half, the Comet held Lutcher on their own two yard line
following a great punt by Kevin Blank. The Comets took over on the Bulldog
38 yard line. Five plays later the Comets scored on a 25 yard pass from
Jason Waguespack to John Bordelon. The PAT knotted the score at 7 at the
end of the first half. In the 3rd quarter Waguespack kicked a 23
yard field goal to put the Comets on top10-7. Early in the
fourth quarter the Comets seized control of the game. The big offensive
play was a 73 run by Todd Bain on a nicely blocked trap play. Two
plays later Waguespack connected with Bordelon again this time from 7
yards out. The Comets lead swelled to 17-7 with the PAT. On the
first play after the kickoff Jerry Gair intercepted a Lutcher pass and
raced 24 yards down the sidelines to the Bulldog 6 yard line. Two plays
later it was the Waguespack to Bordelon connection again from 7 yards out.
With 8:28 left in the game the Comets lead increased to 24-7. The
Comet defense which had played well all night long refused to bend late in
the game forcing a 7th punt by the Bulldogs. The Comet offense, relying on
the pass most of the night, began to run the ball on a tiring Lutcher
defense. The Comets were able to kill most of the remaining time in the
game with their running game. The Comets dominated the statistical
battle allowing Lutcher only 103 yards total offense while piling up over
300 yards against the highly rated Bulldog defense. Click below to view

The Comets lead 9-3as Cecelia scored on a 49 yard field goal. The Comet offense responded with a another long scoring drive- this one took over 8:00 minutes on the clock. Kelly Noel scored on a 4 yard run. The Comet committed a fatal mistake when they had 12 men on the field for the PAT attempt. Cecilia converted a two point pass play to narrow the Comet lead to 17-11. The Comets were not able to sustain a drive on their next possession and punted to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs scored and kicked the PAT to lead 18-17 with a little over 5 minutes remaining. The Comet offense responded with a long drive from their 20 to the Bulldog 11. With only 5 seconds remaining, the Comets tried a field goal that sailed wide left. Cecilia escaped with an 18-17 win leaving the Comets crushed as the season came to an abrupt end.
