Homecoming win

Comets shut-out Lions 42-0

Big plays on test defense and special teams propelled the Comets to their 5th straight win and 3rd straight shutout --a 42-0 homecoming win over the Booker T Washington Lions Friday night at Dupuy stadium. The game marked the conclusion of non-district play but with the new power point system in place for the playoffs every win is as important as the other. The Comets open district play next week in Thibodaux against the E. D. White Cardinals.
Defensive back Jerry Gair picked off an errant Lion pass and rambled 58 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. The play came at a good time as the Lions were effective on their opening drive using a slow down ball control offense against the Comets.
The Comets stopped the Lions on their next possession and forced a punt. The Comet offense which was on the sideline most of the night, drove 76 yards on 7 plays for a touchdown. Todd Babin ran in from one yard out to put the Comets on top 13-0. Waguespack's second PAT gave the Comets a 14-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
Seconds into the second quarter Comet cornerback John Howard intercepted a pass and returned it for an apparent touchdown. But the Comets were guilty of clipping on the return. A few plays later Waguespack connected with John Bordelon on a 20 yard scoring strike. The PAT put the Comets on top 21-0 early in the second quarter.
After three plays netted 2 yards for the Lions, Chris Cancienne blocked a punt (his 3rd of the year) and Steven Ramirez recovered for a Comet touchdown. The PAT put the Comets on top 28-0.
A fake punt helped the Lions sustain an 11 play drive on their next possession which ate up most of the rest of the time in the second quarter. But late in the quarter Matt Boucvalt hauled in a screen pass from Waguespack and danced into the endzone from 10 yards out. The PAT put the Comets up 35-0 at the half.
The second half was marked by penalties on both teams. After a scoreless third quarter, the Comets scored their final touchdown on a 9 yard run by freshman Tyrell Fenroy. The PAT made the final 42-0. The touchdown was set-up by another blocked punt this one by Steven Ramirez. The Comets recovered and Fenroy scored on the next play.
The Comet offense had only 33 snaps in the game which had  a total of 18 penalties called on the two teams.
Next Friday the Comets travel to Thibodaux to face district rival E. D. White. It will be the 10-AAA opener for both teams. The Cardinals are 4-1 with their only loss to South Terrebonne 7-0. The game represents an opportunity for the Comets to gain respect against a quality opponent on the road in a hostile environment. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
