Bi-District Playoffs

Cecilia edges Comets 18-17

Cecilia's Bulldogs came into Dupuy stadium with a rich playoff tradition and despite falling behind the Comets 17-3 in the third quarter, rallied for a 18-17 victory in the Bi-district playoffs. For the Comets it was a heartbreaking loss as a potential game winning 29 yard field goal sailed wide left as time expired. The loss ended one of the finest seasons in Comet football history and left the Comets with a 9-2 record.
The Comets scored all of the points in the first half to take a 9-0 lead. The Comet defense repeatedly stopped Cecilia's offense and was able to get three turnovers- two fumbles and one interception. But the Comets were only able to get one touchdown and one field goal. Later on this would come back to haunt the Comets as they tried to hold off the Bulldog fourth quarter rally.
The first score of the game came on a 41 yard field goal by Jason Waguespack and gave the Comets a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The score was set-up by a fumble recovery by Kevin Blank.
Midway through the second quarter the Comets mounted a 12 play scoring drive that ended with a Waguespack to Bordelon touchdown pass from  21 yards out. The PAT was no good. The score at the half was 9-0.
On the Comets' first possession in the second half, the Comets fumbled deep in their own territory. The defense stiffened and Cecilia's outstanding kicker booted a school record 49 yard field goal to narrow the Comets lead to 9-3.
The Comet offense responded with a another long scoring drive- this one took over 8:00 minutes on the clock. Jason  Waguespack scored on a 1 yard sneak. The Comets lead stood at 17-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Cecilia showed they would not quit and responded with an 85 yard drive. Kelly Noel scored on a 4 yard run.
The Comet committed a fatal mistake when they had  12 men on the field for the PAT attempt. Cecilia took the penalty changed their mind and then converted a two point pass play to narrow the Comet lead to 17-11.
The Comets were not able to sustain a drive on their next possession and punted to the Bulldogs. Cecilia then marched 75 yards to score what would be the game winning touchdown. Kent Journet scored on a 5 yard run. Stelly's PAT put the Bulldogs in the lead 18-17 with a little over 5 minutes remaining.
The Comet offense responded with a long drive from their 20 to the Bulldog 11. Jason Waguespack completed 7 of 8 passes on the drive. With only 5 seconds remaining, the Comets tried a  field goal that sailed wide left. Cecilia  escaped with an 18-17 win leaving the Comets crushed as the season came to an abrupt end.
