Comets Stun Destrehan
28-9 in Jamboree

The St. Charles-Destrehan match-up was the fourth and final in the annual River Parishes Jamboree Friday night in Destrehan. The first three games all had higher classification teams defeating lower classification teams by a three touchdown margin. So the script for the game between 5A Destrehan and 3A St. Charles  appeared to have already been written. But someone forgot to tell the Comet football team.

After two 15 minute halves of football it was the Comets who had stunned the Wildcats and the remaining fans who had endured to the end of the two day event. The Comets jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and held on for an impressive 28-9 victory the first ever jamboree win for a St. Charles team over Destrehan.

Some nifty running by Matt Sutton on the return of the opening kickoff seemed to spark the Comets who drove 57 yards in just 6 plays for a score. Tyrell Fenroy bolted 24 yards on a third and two from the Wildcat 24 yard line. Big play in the drive was a pass from quarterback Jesse Martin to Jarvis Sanders for 18 yards.

The Comet defense held Destrehan to just one yard in three plays forcing a punt. Casey Robottom returned the ball 16 yards to the Wildcat 33 putting the Comet offense in excellent field position. Fenroy ran for 7 and 25 yards setting up a one yard touchdown by Jesse Martin. Sellars made his second PAT and the Comets lead 14-0 with 9:53 left in the first half.

The teams traded possessions until late in the half when Destrehan mount a scoring drive that resulted in a 24 yard field goal by Kyle Tizzard. The Comets held a 14-3 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats mounted their best drive of the game going 90 yards in 10 plays after the second half kickoff. Stephen Simms scored on  a 4 yard run  but the two point try failed and the Comets held on to a 14-9 lead.

But as quick as you could say momentum Tyrell Fenroy raced 80 yards off left tackle for a touchdown that seemed to take get the Comet back on track and in command of the game. Sellars PAT gave the Comets a 21-9 lead with 11:05 left in the game.

Once again the Comet defense held the Wildcats to just one yard in three plays forcing another punt. On first down Jarvis Sanders burst up the middle for a 43 yard gain all the way to the Wildcat 13 yard line. Two plays later Fenroy scored his third touchdown of the night on a one yard run. The PAT made the score 28-9.

Fenroy finished the night with 164 yards on 12 carries. The Comet defense did not get any turnovers but played aggressively all night long with good pursuit to the ball and gang tackling. Friday night the Comets travel to face another 5A foe the Terrebonne Tigers. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The Comets were named "Team of the Week" by the New Orleans Saints for their 28-9 jamboree win over Destrehan. The Comets were featured on the TV show "Inside the New Orleans Saints."
