 District 9-AAA game

     SCC 30, Donaldsonville 12

With the their backs against the wall and the success of their season on the line, the Comets roared past the Donaldsonville Tigers 30-12 last Friday night in Laplace. The important 9-AAA game kept the Comets' playoff hopes alive. It was  their first 9-AAA win upping the record to 1-2 in district play and 3-5 overall. For Donaldsonville the loss ended a 4 game win streak and knocked the Tigers out of first place in the district race.

Donaldsonville took the opening kickoff and moved 69 yards in 10 plays for the games first touchdown. Mike Lymon scored on a 1 yard run but the two point attempt was no good and the Tigers led 6-0. A short punt put SCC in business inside Tiger territory. The Comets moved quickly to the 3 yard line where Doug Friloux scored a touchdown. Jason Waguespack's PAT put the Comets on top 7-6 with 5: 39 to go in the 1st quarter.

The second quarter was the most productive scoring quarter of the season for the Comets. The Comets passing attack got going and Jason Waguespack threw the first of two touchdown passes to receiver Toby Jacob. It covered 7 yards and the PAT put the Comets ahead 14-6. Moments later Todd Babin raced in from 3 yards out but the PAT failed and the Comets lead 20-6. Defensive end Chris Cancienne caused a fumble that was recovered by Derrick Gaubert inside the 10 yard line of D'vlle. Waguespack and Jacob teamed up on a 12 yard touchdown pass play. The PAT put the Comets up 27-6. But the explosive Donaldsonville offense marched for another touchdown with only seconds left in the half. Another two point play failed leaving the score 27-12 in favor of SCC at the half.

The second half promised more offensive fireworks but failed to deliver with the only points coming on a 46 yard field goal by Jason Waguespack. Twice the Tigers moved deep into Comet territory but the Comets defense stiffened. On one drive Matt Arceneaux recovered a Tiger fumble to stop the drive. And on the final Tiger scoring threat the defense batted two Tiger passes away inside the 10 yard line.

Runnng back Doug Friloux led the Comet offense with 112 yards on 21 carries.  Toby Jacob had 6 receptions for 40 yards and two touchdowns.

The Comets will step out of district play to face AA power Christian Life Friday night in Baton Rouge. The Crusaders are currently ranked #3 in the latest AA state poll. The Comets need the win if they are to stay in contention for a playoff berth.
