Turnovers costly

Donaldsonville hands Comets their first loss 27-24

Despite winning their first two district games the Comets were living on the edge having committed numerous mental mistakes and offensive turnovers in wins over E. D. White  and St. James. The pattern continued  Friday night and it was a hungry Donaldsonville  that made the Comets pay handing them their first loss of the season by a score of 27-24. The Comets committed six turnovers in the form of three fumbles and three interceptions. On the flip side the Comets  failed to take advantage of a Donaldsonville turnover early in the game.
The Comet defense opened up the game with linebacker Cory Madere  forcing and recovering a fumble inside the Donaldsonville 10 yard line. Three plays netted no yards for the Comets who were forced to try a short field goal. The field goal attempt sailed wide left and it would turn out to haunt the Comets later in the game.
Later on in the first quarter, Jerry Gair picked off an errant Tiger pass and returned deep into Donaldsonville territory. This time the Comet offense cashed in with Todd  Babin scoring on a 2 yard run. The PAT by Waguespack gave the Comets a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The teams traded punts before Donaldsonville benefited from a bizarre touchdown play. Stopped deep in their own territory the Tigers were forced to punt. The punter bobbled the snap and was being tackled by three Comets when he tossed a short pass to the Tiger wingback who raced 65 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The play ignited the Tigers who played fearlessly the rest of the game.
Late in the second quarter the Comets benefited from a forced fumble by Chris Cancienne which was recovered by Kevin Blank Two plays later the Comets scored on a 10 yard pass play from Jason Waguespack to Matt Boucvalt. The PAT put the Comets on top 14-7 at the half.
Donaldsonville dominated the 3rd quarter scoring 14  points while the Comets were limited to a field goal.. The first touchdown was set-up by a Comet fumble  that was picked up and returned by a Tiger defender to the Comet 11 yard line. The PAT was wide and the Comets held a slim 14-13 lead.
The Comets moved the ball on their next possession into Tiger territory but failed on a 3rd and two from the Tiger 30 yard line. The Comets settled for e 38 yard field goal by Waguespack to lead 17-13.
It did no take Donaldsonville long to respond. On the first pay following the kickoff, Tiger quarterback Tremain Brown raced 69 yards around end on an option play. The Tigers two point play was successful and they lead 21-17 at the end of three quarters.
The turnover bug bit the Comets again in the fourth quarter as an errant pass was picked off by the Tigers. This time they methodically moved down the field to score what would be the winning touchdown with just over three minutes remaining. The PAT was no good and the Comets trailed 27-24.
The Comets did march down the field to score one more touchdown and narrow the score to 27-24. But the damage was done, the mistakes too many to overcome and the Comets tasted defeat for the first time in the 2001 season.
The Comets loss coupled with St. James' 21-6 in over Lutcher made the 10-AAA race tighten up considerably. Four teams have only one loss with E. D White being the only team having two losses.
This week the Comets step out of district to play a very strong and well-coached St. Thomas Aquinas team in Strawberry stadium on the Southeastern campus. The Falcons are 7-1 and have won 19 of their last 21 games dating back to last season. With the new power point system this game is just as important as any other game on the Comet schedule.  Kickoff is at 7.p.m.
