10-AAA district game

Comets defeat Cardinals 30-13

Big plays on special teams propelled the Comets to their sixth straight win and first district win of the year Friday night  in Thibodaux. Two blocked punts and two partial blocks gave the Comets points and field position which was crucial as the Comets defeated the one of their biggest rivals the E. D. White Cardinals 30-13.
The Comets came out out the starting blocks fast scoring 17 unanswered points in the first quarter. Jamall Singleton returned the opening kickoff into EDW territory which gave the Comets good field position on their opening drive. The Comets moved the ball into field goal position and Jason Waguespack connected on a 45 yard. The Comet defense stopped E. D. White on their first possession and forced a punt. It was blocked by Chris Cancienne and recovered by Jonathon Schexnayder.  Four plays later Todd Babin scored on a short run and the Comets held a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Once again the Comets held and forced another punt. This time the Comets went on their longest scoring drive of the night. A big pass play from Waguespack to John Bordelon for 33 yards moved the ball into Cardinal territory. A few plays later Waguespack then connected with Todd Babin on a shuffle pass. Babin scooted all the way to the Cardinal 5 yard line. Two plays later Shane Waite ran around right end on a toss play. Waguespack's PAT gave the Comets a 17-0 lead with a little over 2 minutes left in the first quarter.
The second quarter had the Comets miss another scoring opportunity when another Waguespack's field goal was wide left from  41 yards. This seemed to ignite the Cardinals who mounted a 80 yard drive and easily moved through a tiring Comet defense. Cardinal fullback John Reulet bulled over form 15 yards and the Comets lead was trimmed to 17-7. Before the half would end both teams would fail on scoring opportunities. After a forced fumble and recovery by Anthony Jacob, the Comets moved into Cardinal territory but fumbled inside the ten on a short slant pass. EDW drove to midfield and nearly connected on a long pass play at the Comet two on the last play of the half.
The Comet offense sputtered the second half struggling to make first downs. Once again the Comet punt return team came on and blocked another Cardinal punt. This time it was Derek Mayeux who blocked the punt and Derrick Gaubert who picked it up and ran in from 7 yards. The PAT was wide left giving the Comets a 23-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Cardinals mounted another scoring drive in the fourth quarter this time using pass plays on third and long to keep the drive alive. The touchdown was a 19 yard touchdown pass from EDW quarterback Minton to Hymel. A two point run was stopped by the Comet defense on the one foot line with 7: 49 left in the game leaving the score 23-13..
The ensuing onsides kick was recovered by Derrick Gaubert. The Comets could not move the ball again and punted to EDW with a little over 5 minutes left in the game. The Comet defense stiffened with two big plays by Anthony Jacob. The Comets took over on downs in Cardinal territory. Waguespack connected with Matt Boucvalt on a fourth and two at the EDW 23 yard line with under two minutes to play to set-up the final to score of the game. Waguespack ran 22 yards on an option play. His PAT made the final score 30-13.
The win enabled the Comets to get off to a 1-0 start in district play and push their overall record to 6-0. But the road will get tougher and tougher beginning with this week's game against St. James. The Wildcats are also 1-0 in district having defeated Donaldsonville 21-13 last week. Kick off is at 7 p.m. at Dupuy stadium on the Comet campus in LaPlace.
