Comets rally falls short in 25-20 loss at St. James

The past four weeks the Comets  have battled off the field problems such as fires and hurricanes. They survived and were able to keep their record unscathed. Friday night the Comets could not overcome three second half turnovers and consequently saw a 6-0 halftime lead turn into a 13-6 loss to district rival E. D. White. With the loss the Comets record slipped to 4-1 but more importantly the Comets fell in the hole 0-1 in district 10-AAA competition.

The game itself was indeed a tale of two different halves. The Comets dominated the first half allowing only 33 yards offense and one first down by the Cardinals. Meanwhile the Comet offense threaded through sloppy conditions for 122 yards and no turnovers but only scored six points. And six points would not hold up in the second half especially with the Comets fumbling inside their own 10 yard line and throwing two interceptions in Cardinal territory.

In the second quarter the Comets marched 63 yard on 5 plays and scored their only touchdown of the game. Jeremy Catoire rolled to his left and scooted in from 7 yards out. The PAT was blocked. Big plays in the drive included a 24 yard pass play from Catoire to Brian Huber and a 24 yard pass from Catoire to Travis Trepagnier.

Later on in the quarter the Comet appeared to be in business again when Catoire connected with Chase Grob on a big pass play all the way down to the Cardinal three yard line. But a holding penalty one of only three on the night against the Comets, nullified the play.

Midway in the third quarter the Comets fumbled inside on their own 7 yard line. The Cardinals recovered and cored two plays later. The PAT gave the Cards the lead , the momentum and breathed new life into a team that had been struggling to make first downs against the Comets up until that point in the game.

The Comets drove into Cardinal territory twice in the fourth quarter but interceptions halted the Comets in theirs tracks and each time pumped more life into EDW. After the second interception the Cardinals drove in for their second touchdown. The key play in the drive was a 15 yard face mask penalty against the Comets after they had stopped the Cards on a third down play at the St. Charles 30 yard line.

The Comets reached midfield near the end of the game but a long pass fell incomplete as time expired. Next week the Comets travel to face AAA power and district foe St. James. E. D. White will host the Lutcher Bulldogs.
