Comets edge E. D. White
31-28 in 10-AAA thriller

Three big plays on special teams proved to be the winning formula for the Comets in a 31-28 thriller over E. D. White Friday night at Dupuy stadium in LaPlace. The win coupled with the St. James victory over Lutcher cinched a state playoff berth and at least a share of the district championship for the Comets who travel to face the Bulldogs Friday in Lutcher.

Ben Sellars 25 yard field goal with only 9 seconds left in the game was the difference for the Comets in a game that had five lead changes. The field goal came moments after the Comets blocked an E. D. White field goal attempt with the scored tied at 28. Casey Robottom's 97 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter was the other big play on special teams which helped the Comets in the game.

The Comets made several big plays on offense and defense despite struggling on both sides of the ball for most of the game. Quarterback Jesse Martin passed for over 200 yards with long touchdown passes of 60 and 71 yards to Robottom and Matt Sutton. Sutton's touchdown was a work of art as he caught the ball on a short hitch route, broke tackles and weaved his way across field for the score.

Defensively the Comets were pushed around by the Cardinals' wing-t offense the entire first half before responding with a shutout in the second half. Roland Ricca recovered a fumble to halt one EDW drive and Michael Troglen blocked a field goal to stop another. The Comets intercepted a pass near the end of the half but fumbled the ball back to the Cardinals on the same play.

Offensively, the Comets running game was held to under 100 yards for the first time this season. Running back Tyrell Fenroy had to leave the game in the first quarter due to a minor injury. He did return to the game in the second half and finished with 56 yards on 10 carries and one touchdown. Jesse Martin completed 9 of 14 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Robottom had 3 receptions for 88 yards, and Sutton 3 for 91 yards.

The Comets conclude the regular season at Lutcher Friday night . The outcome of the game will have a tremendous impact on the power point ratings and seedings for the state playoffs. A Comet win will give the Comets the 10-3A district championship while a loss to the Bulldogs will create a three-way tie and share of the title with Lutcher and St. James. The Comets are assured of playoff berth since they can finish no lower than in a tie for first place. The game will mark the final 10-3A game for the Comets who will be dropping down to 2-A next year as a result of recent reclassification meetings.
