The
E. D. White Cardinals used a punishing ground attack to subdue the
Comets 42-21 and bring the 2000 football season to an end. The
loss ended any hopes for the Comets to make the playoffs. The
Cardinals rushed for over 400 yards and controlled the ball
for most of the game.
Early on things
didn't look so bad for the Comets as Doug Friloux took a pitch and
ran 80 yards for an apparent touchdown on the game's first play.
But the referee on the Comet sideline said Friloux stepped
out of bounds and the Comets had to settle for a 17 yard gain
instead of six points. On the next play the Cardinals recovered a
Comet fumble and things started to swing in their favor.
The first quarter ended
7-7, after Friloux scored on a 2 yard run. The touchdown was
setup by a blocked punt by Chris Cancienne. But the Cardinals responded
with 21 unanswered points for a commanding 28-7 halftime lead.
Things got worse before they got better as the lead swelled to
35-7 in the 3rd quarter with the Cardinals controlling the ball
the entire quarter. The Comets had only 3 offensive snaps the
entire period.
But late in the 3rd
quarter the Comet defense came up with two big plays that put the
Comets back in the game. Shannon Graver picked up a fumble and and
returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. Moments later Cancienne
recovered another fumble and returned it 50 yards for a TD.
All of a sudden the
score was 35-21 and the Comets had a chance going into the fourth
quarter. E. D. White came one strong and scored one more time to
make the final 42-21.
The loss ended the
Comet season with a 3-7 overall record and 1-3 district mark. E.
D. White finished 6-4 and 2-2 and will represent the district in
the playoffs with Lutcher and St. James.
