Comets defense, special teams key
in 32-8 win over Donaldsonville

In the battle of two undefeated 5-0 football teams, the Comets capitalized on a stifling defense, key special teams plays and a dominant rushing attack to defeat the Donaldsonville Tigers 32-8 Friday night in Donaldsonville. The game was the 10-2A district opener for both teams.

The Comet defense dominated the game early as the offense moved the ball but was unable to convert into points. In the first half the defense allowed the Tigers only one first down and minus 4 yards total offense.

The Comet speical teams accounted for the games first ten points. Junior kicker Chris Ilski kicked a 42 yard field goal that put the Comets ahead 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Ilski also helped keep Donaldsonville's offense in poor field postion all night with several of his kickoffs out of the endzone with no return.

The Comets blocked a Donaldsonville punt and Kyle Faucheux recovered the ball in the endzone for the first touchdown of the game.

Junior running back Jonathan Cancienne carried 31 times for 244 yards and one touchdown as the Comet offense dominated time of possession in the game and kept the ball away from a speedy and potent Donaldsonville rushing attack.

Leading 10-0 in the second quarter, the Comet defense came up with the first of three interceptions as defensive back Corey Crowder intercepted a Tiger pass near midfield. After a penaly the Comet offense marched 61 yards in 9 plays with quarterback Philip Sutton connecting with wide reciever Matt Ericksen on a 3 yard touchdown pass. The Comet lead stretched to 17-0 with 4:50 left in the half.

Following a Donalsondville punt, the Comets were backed up in their own territory and fumbled the ball for the only turnover the Comets would have in the game. The Tigers recovered on the 18 yard line but could not get any closer than the 16 yard line as the Comet defense stiffened.

The Comets received the second half kickoff with Cancienne returning the ball near midfield. The Comets moved to the Tiger 21 but turned the ball over on downs. Two plays later Kyle Faucheux recovered a fumble and the Comets were back in business on the Tiger 13. Fullback Matt Walters burst through the line on a trap play to put the Comets on top 23 -0. Ilski's PAT made the score 24-0.

Donaldsonville was not about to quit however and came right back for their only touchdown on a 70 yard pass play. The Tigers converted the two point play to trim the Comet lead to 24-8.

The Comet offense came right back driving 80 yards in 11 plays with Cancienne racing 35 yards off of left tackle for the games final score. Sutton connected with Ericksen on the two-point conversion to make the score 32-8.

The Comets moved deep into Tiger territory one more time driving to the ten yard line before substituting the second unit and killing the clock as the game ended.

The Comets return home Friday to face the nationally ranked and 10-2A opponent John Curtis. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Dupuy stadium.
