Comets defeat Brusly 40-6
travel to Port Allen Friday

In a season of ups and downs, the Comets took a step towards consistency in a big 40-6 homecoming victory over the Brusly Panthers Friday night in Dupuy stadium. It marked the first time that the Comets have won back to back games since last year when they defeated Sterlington and St. James in the state quarterfinal and semifinal playoff games.

Equally important was the fact that the Comets recorded their first district win of the season and stayed alive in the power point ratings for the state playoffs this year. After a 3-3 record in the first 6 games the Comets have now outscored their last two opponents 64-6 in posting 2 straight wins to up their record to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in district 9-3A.

It was the Comet special teams that got things going after the defense held the Panthers  deep in their own territory on their first 3 possessions. Following the second punt by Brusly and a 27 yard Jonathan Cancienne retruns the Comets were in business on the Panther 12 yard line. Two plays later Cancienne scored rorm 11 yards out  and Chris Ilski’s PAT gave the Comets a 7-0 lead with 3 minutes to go in the first quarter.

On the 3rd Brusly punt of the night, Matthew Murphy was able to block it and the ball was recovered by Jared Fryoux on the Panther 16 yard line. After Courtland Taylor ran for 12 yards on a reverse, Cancienne scored the second of his 4 touchdowns in the game on a 3 yard run. Following a penalty against the Comets the PAT failed and the Comets led 13-0 early in the second quarter.

The Panthers began to move the ball and finally got into Comet territory at the 44 yard line. Comet defensive tackle Nick Reine forced a fumble that was picked up by Corey Crowder and returned all the way to the Brusly 4 yard line. Cancienne scored again this time from 4 yards out. A two point attempt was no good and the Comets led 19-0.

The Panthers would respond with their only scoring drive of the game going 86 yards in only 6 plays for their touchdown a three yard run by Shane Rivers. The PAT was blocked by Zach Matus.

The Comets answered by going 7 plays in 45 yards on their next possession. Quarterback Vincent Rollo completed a 10 yard touchdown pass to Chris Ilski. The PAT was added by Ilski and the Comets led 26-6 at the half.

The second half was dominated by the Comets who scored two more touchdowns while shutting out the Panthers. Rollo completed a 13 yard touchdown pass to Devin Snyder and Jonathan Cancienne scored on a 22 yard run. Matt Ballard added the final two extra points for the Comets.

Cancienne rushed for 105 yards  and 4 touchdowns on 17 carries. Rollo was 7 of 12 for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

The Comets return to the road to face Port Allen Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
