Comets shutout Pope John Paul,
host Brusly Panthers Friday

For the third time this season the Comets bounced back after a tough loss with a win. This time the Comets shutout Pope John Paul 24-0 following a tough loss to Lutcher the week before. For the Comet defense the shutout was a tremendous confidence booster as the Comets look towards the final three district games and possible playoffs to follow.

Once again the Comet offense got off to a slow start, struggled to maintain a rhythm, but eventually made some big plays and put enough points on the board for the win. The special teams made big plays but also suffered from a fake punt by Pope John Paul and 82 yard kickoff return deep into Comet territory following the Comets final touchdown of the game.

The Comets opening drive was 11 plays long but only netted 35 yards before stalling at the Jaguar 26 yard line. Chris Ilski booted a 43 yard field goal and the Comets led 3-0 with 4 minutes left in the first quarter.

Pope John Paul moved the ball into Comet territory early in the 2nd quarter and attempted a 37 yard field goal that was  blocked by Corey Reed. The Comet offense responded by marching 70 yards in 9 plays for the first touchdown of the game a 5 yard pass form Vincent Rollo to Devin Snyder.

The Comet defense forced a Jaguar punt on their next possession and the offense took over on the Comet 31. With only 3 minutes the Comets were able to get the two minute offense rolling. After Jonathan Cancienne ran for 19 yard to midfield, Rollo completed 4 passes to Chris Ilski with the last one putting the ball on the Jaguar one yard line. Cancienne scored on the next play and Ilski’s PAT put the Comets on top 17-0 at the half.

Cancienne ran the second half kickoff 70 yards to the Pope John Paul 18 yard line. Two plays later Cancienne ran into the endzone from 12 yards out. Ilski’s PAT made the scored 24-0.

The Jaguars most serious scoring threat followed with the long kickoff retrun to the Comets 17. A few plays later with the Jaguars facing a 3rd and goal on the Comet nine yard line, linebacker Tim Boesen intercepted a pass and returned the ball the 20.

The Comets were unable to move the ball on their next two possessions and the 3rd quarter ended with a 24-0 Comet lead. The Comets were able to control the ball for most of the 4th quarter on a 12 play 80 yard drive that lasted over 7 minutes. The drive came to a halt with a fumble in the Comet  backfield that the Jaguars recovered at their own 6 yard line. That was as close as either team would come to scoring the rest of the game.

Senior running back Jonathan Cancienne rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 70 yards for a total of 221 all purpose yards. Vincent Rollo completed 11 of 18 passes for 124 yards and in doing so surpassed the 1,000 yard mark with a season total of  1,022. Rollo has thrown  14 touchdown passes on the season.
