Comets win streak at 3 games
with 43-12 win over Port Allen
All three phases of Comet football, offense, defense, and special teams contributed in a big way as the Comets traveled to Port Allen and handed the Pelicans a 43-12 loss in a key 9-3A district game last Friday. The win moves the Comets record to 6-3 and assures a seventh straight winning season and another berth in the state playoffs. The win also keeps alive the Comets chances to host a playoff game the first week.
The Comets arrival in Port Allen was a little delayed due to an accident on I-10. But it didn’t take the Comets long to get going in the game scoring 17 unanswered points in the first quarter. The Comet defense forced a quick three and out for the Pelicans and the punt return team setup the Comet offense on the Pelican 6 yard line for its first possession. On the second play from scrimmage, quarterback Vincent Rollo passed 9 yards to Devin Snyder for the first score of the game. Chris Ilski kicked the PAT and the Comets led 7-0.
On the Pelicans second possession defensive back Corey Crowder deflected a pass that Justin Vicknair intercepted for the Comets and returned to the Port Allen 32. After the Comets could not move the ball past the 29 yard line, Chris Ilski came in and booted a 45 yard field goal to up the lead to 10-0.
Once again the Comet defense forced a three and out and the Comets took over at midfield after fair catching a punt. After a short gain on first down the Comets went to the air with Rollo completing a 33 yard pass to a wide open Cancienne who had slipped out of the backfield into the flat. Two plays later Rollo connected with Cancienne again this time on a 20 yard touchdown pass. Ilski’s kick gave the Comets a 17-0 lead with 1:49 to go in the first quarter.
The two teams exchanged punts with Port Allen taking over on their on 11 early in the second quarter. The Pelicans went on a long scoring drive going 89 yards in 11 plays and using almost 6 minutes on the clock. The touchdown came on a one yard run but a two point attempt on a fake kick failed. The Comet held a 17-6 lead.
The Comets moved the ball to midfield on their next possession but a pass was deflected and intercepted by the Pelicans. Three plays later the Pelicans scored on a 25 yard touchdown pass and with only 55 seconds left in the half the Comet lead was now only 17-12.
The second half belonged to the Comets as they outscored Port Allen 26-0 and won going away. Offensively the Comets got going on their first possession going 62 yards in 10 plays with Rollo passing for his third touchdown of the game. Rollo connected with Jason Ray for a 23 yard score. A two point try failed and the Comet lead was 23-12.
The Comets scored on their next possession with Jonathan Cancienne running in from 6 yards. Islki’s PAT made the score 30-12 with only 2:27 to go in the 3rd quarter. The Comets added two more 4th quarter scores to make the final 43-12. Jason Ray scored on a 6 yard run and Vincent Rollo on a 45 yard interception return on the final play of the game.
The Comet defense held the Pelicans in check the entire second half as they only allowed 2 first downs and the Pelicans to cross midfield once.
Jonathan Cancienne rushed for 105 yards and scored 2 touchdowns - one rushing and one receiving. Rollo completed 10 of 18 passes for 141 yards and 3 touchdowns and also scored on the interception return. Jason Ray scored twice- one on the ground and one receiving.
