Comets defeat WSJ Rams 21-12,
visit Lutcher Bulldogs Friday
The Comet defense rose to the occasion playing its best football since the opening week of the season and it could not have come at a better time in the Comets 21-12 win over
Offensively the Comets struggled to put together a consistent attack never really getting into any rhythm in the game. But the Comets did score three touchdowns which was just enough for the Comets to win the game.
Just 4 plays later the Comets turned the ball over to the Rams fumbling at the Comet 27 yard line. This time the Rams cashed in scoring on a 15 yard pass play. The two point try failed and this would become more important later in the game. As the quarter came to a close the Rams held a 6-0 lead.
The Comet offense took over deep in Ram territory after a Ram punt went only ten yards. The drive stalled and the Comets tried a field goal that was blocked. The Rams were guilty of a personal foul giving the Comets the ball and new life. Three plays later quarterback Vincent Rollo passed 6 yards to Alex Marse for a touchdown. Chris Ilski’s kick put the Comets on top 7-6 with 8:32 left in the second quarter.
Neither team could mount a serious scoring threat in the third quarter. The Comets took the ball over and marched 54 yards for their final score of the night in the beginning of the 4th quarter. Sophomore tailback Jason Ray scored on a three yard run. Ray carried the last 5 plays of the drive on runs of 9,2,6,7 and 3 yards. Ilski’s kick put the Comets up 21-6 with 8 minutes remaining in the game.
On the Rams next possession Corey Crowder intercepted a pass giving the Comets the ball near midfield. The Comets could not capitalize however, and punted back to the Rams. The Rams took advantage of getting the ball back and scored on a 56 yard pass with a little over 3 minutes. Another two point try failed. The Rams then tried an onsides kick which was recovered by the Comets.
The Comets could not move the ball and punted back to the Rams. With the clock winding down, Comet defensive back Corey Reed picked off a Ram pass and the Comets held on to win 21-12.
The Comets will open up district play Friday night facing the Lutcher Bulldogs in Lutcher at 7 p.m.
