Comets handle Ferriday Trojans 48-13;
visit Sterlington in 2A quarterfinals next

The Comets put together a complete ball game for the first time in several weeks and that added up to bad news for the visiting Ferriday Trojans who were on the short end of a 48-13 score in last Friday's second round playoff game at Dupuy stadium in Laplace. The win advances the Comets to the quarterfinals for the 3rd straight year and for the second year in a row the Comets travel to North Louisiana this time to face the Sterlington Panthers.

Offensively, the Comets had been struggling in the early going for 3 straight games but that was not the case Friday as the Comets scored on all four first half possessions and then scored on the first possession of the second half.

After the Comet defense forced a punt , the Comets took over on on their own 41 yard line. Eight plays later Jonathan Cancienne ran up the middle from 14 yards out to light up the scorebaord. A two point attempt failed and the score was 6-0.

After another three and out by the Comet defense, the Comet offense drove 51 yards in 11 plays with Matt Walters scoring on a one yard run. Another two point attempt failed and the score stood at 12-0.

Ferriday mounted its best drive of the night going 74 yards in 16 plays scoring on a 8 yard pass play to the tight end. The PAT narrowed the Comet lead to 12-7 and that was the closest the Trojans would get the rest of the night.

The Comets scored twice more before halftime to take a 27-7 lead at the break. Jonathan Cancienne scored on a two yard run and Walters scored again on another one yard run. Chris Ilski's PAT kicks were good after both touchdowns.

The Comets scored quickly after the second half kickoff was returned 55 yards by Jonathan Cancienne. On the next play Cancienne scored for the 3rd time in the game on a nice 23 yard run.

The Comet defense came up with big play as liiebacker Steven Graver returned a deflected pass 37 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Graver picked off the ball after Corey Reed came up with a big hit on the Trojan receiver.

The Comets went to some younger players in the fourth quarter and sophomore Devin Snyder scored his first touchdown as a Comet on a 21 yard pass from Vincent Rollo.

Jonathan Cancienne rushed for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Comets offense.

Friday night the Comets face the Sterlington Panthers in the state quarterfinals. Sterlington is located 12 miles north of Monroe off of US 165. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
