Comets defeat Rebels 10-7 in Jamboree

It wasn't a night of perfection, but the Comets were able to do just enough to pull off a 10-7 win over Riverside in the Ed Reed River Parishes Jamboree Friday night at East St. John. The Comets relied on stellar special teams play and better second half defense as the offense could not muster any type of consistent rythm and flow in the game.

The Rebels controlled the ball and the game for most of the first 15 minute half. With their first drive stalling in the red zone, the Rebels tried a field goal that was wide left. The next drive the Rebels moved down the field following a short Comet punt near midfield. Jarid Caesar's one yard run gave the Rebels the lead with only 3 minutes left in the half.

On the ensueing kickoff Jonathan Cancienne dashed 94 yards to give the Comets a touchdown and some sorely needed momentum in the game. Chris Ilski's PAT tied the game at 7.

The Comets received a break on the Rebels first play from scrimmage after the kickoff when a quarterback handoff fell to the ground. Linebacker Steven Graver recovered for the Comets on the Rebel 20 yard line. On first down the Comets ran to the 16 yard line. After a series of penalties and a sack the Comets found themsleves all the way back at midfield as the half came to a close.

The second half saw the Comet defense stiffen some while the Comet offense had several big plays called back because of penalties. With under three minutes remaining Jonathan Cancienne returned a punt 63 yards to the Rebel one yard line. The Comets were guitly of holding on the return and the ball was placed on the Rebel 29 yard. With the clock ticking down the Comets ran the ball until only 30 seconds remained. Chris Ilski came in and kicked a game-winning 37 yard field goal.

The Comets were penalized 7 times for 72 yards and had only 1 pass completion in the game. Cancienne's 130 yards in returns and Ilski's field goal were the offensive highlights.

Friday night the Comets travel to face South Lafourche in the season opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 7.pm.
