Comets shutout Sumner 34-0
host Ferriday Trojans next
The Comet defense rose to the occasion in the first round of the playoffs posting the 5th shutout of the season Friday night against Jewel Sumner. Holding the Cowboys at bay most of the night gave the Comet offense time to come around in the second half breaking open a close game and turning the game into a 34-0 final.
The Comets advance to the next round of the playoffs hosting the Ferriday Trojans a 40-16 winner over University High. The game will be played Friday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Dupuy stadium.
The Comet offense has been slow starting the past 3 games and Friday night was no exception. After scoring on the opening possession despite three holding calls in the redzone, the Comets struggled the rest of the first half despite great field position and turnovers provided by the Comet defense.
On the first drive, one that took 8 minutes and 17 plays, the Comets scored despite moving the ball downfield to the 12 and 14 yard line only to be called for holding. Quarterback Phil Sutton connected with receiver Matt Ericksen to move the ball to the 8 yard line. Jonathan Cancienne scored on the next play. Ilski's kick put the Comets on top 7-0.
Jordan Millet intercepted a Cowboy pass and returned it to the Sumner 37 yard line. The drive stalled and Chris Ilski kicked a 40 yard field goal to give the Comets a 10-0 lead.
On the next Sumner possession Millet picked off another Cowboy pass and returned it to the 31 yard line. This time the Comets fumbled the ball back to Sumner on the plus 18 yard line.
The two teams traded punts until late in the half when the Comets mounted another drive. But the drive stalled with Ilski missing on a 38 yard field goal attempt right before half.
The second half started slowly for the Comets with two punts and a fumble on the Sumner one yard line that was recovered by the Cowboys. On the next play Ryan Ralser tackled the Cowboys in the endzone for a safety and 12-0 Comet lead.
That play seemed to ignite the Comets as the offense only took one play to score after the free kick following the safety. Jonathan Cancienne ran around right end and followed some good blocking down the sidelines for a 49 yard touchdown run giving the Comets a 18-0 lead. The play seemed to break the will of the Cowboys who never quite reached their level of play the rest of the game.
The Comets scored two more times on a 19 yard run by Chase Fletcher and a 19 yard run buy Courtland Taylor to make the final 34-0.
