Comets shutout Terrebonne 31-0,
host Ponchatoula Green Wave Friday
The Comets opened the season with a 31-0 shutout of the 5-A Terrebonne Tigers at Dupuy field in Laplace. The Comets were solid in all three phases of their game - offense , defense, and special teams.
The special teams helped the Comets get on the scoreboard first as junior kicker Chris Ilski booted a 25 yard field goal to put the Comets up 3-0 near the end of the first quarter. The Comets had moved the ball from their own 27 to the Tiger 8 yard line in 11 plays before the drive stalled.
On Terrebonne's next series the Tigers fumbled and defensive end Patrick Crowder recovered for the Comets. The Comets moved to the Tiger 14 and then fumbled the ball back to Terrebonne.
Midway in the second quarter the Comets took over on downs after the Tigers had moved deep into Comet territory on a long drive. Three plays later quarterback Philip Sutton connected with Chase Fletcher on a 64 scoring pass for the first touchdown of the game. Ilski's PAT gave the Comets a 10-0 lead.
The Comet defense stiffened forcing a Terrebone punt on their next possession. The Comets took over at midfield and six plays later running back Jonathan Cancienne scored on a 27 yard run. Ilski's PAT put the Comets up 17-0. Comet defensive back Corey Reed picked off a Tiger pass on the last play of the first half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter but the Comet started a drive late in the quarter. Jonathan Cancienne had runs of 20 and 24 yards moving the Comets to the Tiger 8 yard line. On second and goal from the 8 yard line, Sutton connected with Fletcher again for a touchdown as the Comet lead swelled to 24-0.
The Comes final score would come on a 8 yard run by fullback Matt Walters with about 4 minutes remaining in the game.
Philip Sutton and Jonathan Cancienne led the Comets offensive attack in the game. Sutton completed 8 of 10 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Cancienne rushed for 108 yards on 13 carries and one score. Fletcher had 3 catches for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Comets will host another 5-A opponent Friday when the Ponchatoula Green Wave visit Dupuy stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
