Comets shutout WSJ Rams 42-0,
open district play at Donaldsonville

Three touchdowns inside the final two minutes of the second quarter sparked the Comets in a 42-0 shutout win over the West St. John Rams Friday night in Edgard. The shutout was the third of the season for the Comet defense which has allowed only 13 points in five games this season. The Comets remained undefeated (5-0) with the win.

The Comets kept the ball for half of the first quarter on the opening drive of the game going 64 yards in 11 plays to get on the scoreboard. Jonathan Cancienne's 1 yard touchdown run and Chris Ilski's PAT conversion put the Comets ahead 7-0 which would prove to be all the points they would need to win the game.

After the two teams drives stalled and were followed by punts the Comets took over on their own 28 yard line midway through the seond quarter. Fullback Matt Walters broke free on a draw play racing 50 yards all the way to the Ram 30 yard line. Six plays later quarterback Phil Sutton tossed a 14 yard scoring pass to wide receiver Matt Ericksen in the corner of the endzone.

On the ensuing kickoff the Comets stripped the ball from Rams return man Daron Batholomew on the 8 yard line and Corey Reed recovered in the endzone for the Comets.

On the first snap following the next kickoff Comet noseguard Nick Reine recoverd a fumbled quarterback center exhchange and the Comets were in business on the Ram 14 yard line. Quarterback Phil Sutton connected with receiver Chase Fletcher on a post route over the middle for a 14 yard touchdown pass. Comet kicker Chrsi Ilski added all three extra points as the Comets lead swelled to 35-0 right before halftime.

The Comets final score of the game came early in the fourth quarter as backup quarterback Vincent Rollo hit fullback Matt Walters in the flat. Walters broke a tackle and scooted 12 yards for the score.

The rest of the game the Comets cleared the bench playing mostly JV players. Jonathan Cancienne finished with 98 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Philip Sutton was a perfect 5 for 5 for 70 yards and 2 touchdown passes.

This Friday the Comets travel to Donaldsonville to face the Tigers in the first district contest for both teams. Both teams are 5-0 and highly ranked in the state playoff power point rankings. Kickoff is for 7 p.m.
