| Some
would probably refer to it as an ugly win, but you would have a
tough time convincing about 80 Comet football players that it was
anything but beautiful as they celebrated a 16-13 victory over
Grace King Friday night. Not even the remnants of a day long rain
storm could spoil the party for Comet fans and players as they
enjoyed their first win of the young season over the 5-A
Irish in what proved to be a hard fought contest from start to
finish. The win evened the Comets record at 1-1, while Grace King
fell to 0-2.
The Comets opened the game
by marching 67 yards on just 6 plays. Quarterback Jason Waguespack
found running back Randy Madere open on a boot pass for a 20 yard
touchdown play. The PAT was wide and SCC had an early 6-0 lead.
The Irish showed that they
came to play by promptly marching 76 yards on nine plays to tie
the score on a one yard touchdown run. After that the game settled
down with neither team scoring again the rest of the first half.
The Comets got a big break
on the first play of the third quarter when Grace King fumbled
deep in their own territory. Kevin Blank recovered for the Comets.
Two plays later Waguespack connected with receiver Phil Hoffman
for a 9 yard touchdown. This time the PAT was good giving the
Comets a 13-6 lead. The Comet defense came out
fighting in the second half but the Irish capitalized on a Comet
fumble and marched 52 yards for a score at the end of the third
quarter. The game headed into the final quarter tied at 13 all.
The Comets marched into Irish
territory but could not punch it in, and kicker Jason Waguespack
kicked what proved to be a game winning 24 yard field goal with 9
minutes to play in the game. Grace King move the ball into Comet
territory but the Comet defense stiffened and the Irish punted to
the Comets pinning them deep inside the 10 yard line. However, the
Comet offense took over and controlled the ball for the remaining
5 minutes of the game.
The Comets will celebrate
homecoming week this week hosting Lawless at 7 p.m. in Laplace at
Dupuy stadium.
