It
was a game of highs and lows that ended on a very high note when Jason
Waguespack's PAT in overtime gave the Comets a thrilling 7-6
overtime win over the 10-AAA Lawless Pythians Friday night
at Dupuy stadium in LaPlace.
For four quarters the Comets
squandered several scoring opportunities by a series of
penalties, fumbles, and mental mistakes. Those opportunities came
packaged in the form of 4 turnovers and good field position all
night long. Despite that the Comets finished regulation with no
points. The Comet defense held Lawless out of the endzone during regulation
and that gave SCC a chance to post its second win of the season
and improve their record to 2-1.
After a scoreless
regulation, Lawless went on offense first and scored on 3rd
down on a four yard run. Chris Canciennne blocked the PAT attempt
which proved to be crucial later on. On the Comets second play of
overtime Jason Waguespack tossed a 10 yard pass to Phil Hoffman in
the corner of the endzone to tie the game. Then Waguespack who earlier
missed on 3 field attempts booted the PAT to give the Comets
a 7-6 win in a hard fought contest that was up
for grabs.
The Comet defense pitched a
shut out and came up with 4 big turnovers during regulation.
Defensive backs Anthony Jacob and Matt Arceneaux intercepted
Lawless passes while Jacob and Gabe Sellars recovered
Pythian fumbles.
The Comets return home next
Friday night to host AA Newman. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
