Comets Shutout Lawless

The Comets early season success continued to snowball  with a big 55-0 shutout win over Lawless last Friday night in LaPlace.
The game featured stingy defense , excellent special teams play and an offense that continues to put up plenty points. The Comets upped their overall record to 3-0 for their best start in four years.
After the defense stopped Lawless on its first possession, the Comet offense benefited with great field position inside the Pythian 30 yard line. It only took two plays to score as quarterback Jason Waguespack connected with Todd Babin on a 25 yard screen pass. Babin broke a tackle and raced in for the score. Waguespack added the PAT. This opened the floodgates for the Comets who put up 41 points in the first half.
The defense stopped Lawless again this time on a Derrick Gaubert intercpetion deep in Lawless territory. The Comets had another short field to play on. Waguespack hooked up with receiver Matt Boucvalt who scored from 8 yards out on another screen pass. Moments later, Waguespack tossed another touchdown pass to John Bordelon this one from 13 yards out. The PAT was wide and the Comets led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
On  the first play of the second quarter Todd Babin raced in from 21 yards out on a nicely blocked trap play. The PAT upped the score to 27-0. The Comets scored two more times before half. Jamall Singleton plowed in from two yards out and quarterback Mike Grady completed a 30 yard pass to John Bordelon. Steven Ramirez added the PAT's to make the halftime score 41-0.
In the second half the Comets went to their bench heavily playing many sophomores and freshmen. The first unit did play on the first drive of the second half and Singleton scored on a one yard run. Late in the fourth quarter freshman running back Tyrell Fenroy closed out the scoring on a  9 yard run. Ramirez's PAT made the final 55-0.
Linebacker Derrick Gaubert intercepted a pass, Cory Madere blocked a punt and Travis Trepagnier recovered a fumbled punt to aid the Comets cause.
Waguespack completed 7-10 passes for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns to raise his season totals to 29 of 38 for 473 yards and 8 touchdowns. Defensively the Comets were led by Chris Canciennne.
The Comets continue their long home stand hosting the Loranger Wolves Friday night at Dupuy stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
