Comets get third win
21-6 over Loranger

For most of the game, the St Charles-Loranger game Friday had the look of a jamboree or season opening game. Mistakes that accompany such games were plentiful, but the  Comets overcame a sluggish start and defeated Loranger 21-6 for their third win of the season. It was the Comets first game in two weeks having lost last week's Lawless game to a cancellation. The game also came less than 40 hours after tropical storm Isidore pounded South Louisiana and caused cancellation of school and practice for the Comets.

The first quarter had the Comets offense taking 17 snaps most of which were in Loranger territory. But an interception in the endzone on one possession  and a fumble on fourth down on another  turned the ball over to the Wolves twice in their own territory and left the Comet scoreless.

In the second quarter the Comets punted form midfield and the Wolves muffed the punt return. Travis Trepagnier recovered for the Comets on the Wolves nine yard line. ON the next play Jeremy Catoire connected with Jamall Singleton for a 9 yard touchdown pass play. Ben Sellars added the PAT and the Comet had a 7-0 lead.

Late in the second quarter, Brandon Levet returned a punt from the Loranger 47 down to the 23 yard line. Five plays later it was Catoire to Singleton again this time on a 11 yard screen pass. Sellars PAT gave the Comets  14-0 lead with only 37 seconds left in the half.

More mistakes followed in the second half for the Comets who struggled offensively while the defense continued to pitch a shut-out. Tackle Daniel Leblanc deflected a Loranger pass that was intercepted by Chris Cancienne on the Loranger 15 yard line. Two plays later Catoire threw his third touchdown pass of the night this time to Brian Huber. Sellars PAT gave the Comets a 21-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was uneventful until Loranger recovered a fumble deep in Comet territory. Facing a fourth down Loranger completed a touchdown pass for their only score and the first score on the Comet defense this season.

Defensive end Alton Alexander had three sacks and  forced a fumble that was recovered by Jeremiah Johnson.  Chris Cancienne blocked a punt and intercepted a pass that was deflected by Daniel LeBlanc. Lee Kliebert had an interception on the last play of the first half.

The Comets return home to face B. T. Washington next Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff in Dupuy stadium.
