The
Lutcher-St Charles game played in Laplace last Friday was one of those
games that left both teams saying woulda, coulda, shouda. But unfortunately
for the Comets it was three costly miscues which led to 3 Bulldog
touchdowns and that proved to be too much to overcome in a 21-7
loss in the 9-AAA opener for both teams.
Lutcher came in as
the defending 9-AAA champions and as a favorite to repeat while
the underdog Comets came in as the predicted last place team in
9-AAA. Day long rains made fans from both teams wonder how it
would effect their teams play.
Early on the Comet
defense served notice that they came to play holding a talented
Lutcher offense at bay. But the Comet offense, playing near midfield
committed the first big mistake of the game. A high snap sailed
past quarterback Jason Waguespack who was unable to retrieve the
ball. Lutcher recovered the ball in SCC territory. The Comet
defense appeared to stiffen but a 4th down pass went for a Bulldog
touchdown as a Comet defender slipped on the play.
Once again the
Comets moved the ball this time into Lutcher territory. A fourth
down pass was batted and intercepted by a Lutcher defensive end
who raced in untouched to give the 'Dogs a 14-0 lead that
would hold up until halftime.
The third quarter
was scoreless for both teams. Midway through the fourth quarter
tackle Garrett Stephens intercepted a pass for the Comets deep in
Lutcher territory. Several plays later Jason Waguespack and Phil
Hoffman connected on 8 yard touchdown pass play. Hoffman's PAT
made the score 14-7 with a little over 4 minutes left in the
game.
The Comets decided
to go for the onsides kick which curved backwards 10 yards putting
the Bulldogs in business at the Comet 30 yard line. Lutcher drove
to the 2 yard line and scored on a quarterback sneak with 1:01
left in the game.
The Comets
outgained Lutcher 249-191 but could not overcome the 3 mistakes
that led to all of Lutcher's points. Defensively, the Comets were
led by tackle Garrett Stephens. Defensive back Jerry Gair intercepted
a Lutcher pass in the second quarter.
With the loss the
Comets fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in district play. Lutcher
improved to 3--3 overall and 1-0 in district play. Next week
Lutcher will host E. D. White while the Comets travel to face the
St. James Wildcats.
