The Comets offense and defense came up with timely performances in a 16- 6 win over district rival Lutcher Friday night in Lutcher. With their backs against the wall and momentum on Lutcher's side, the Comet offense drove 96 yards on 15 plays to score a touchdown that would stretch the lead to 16-6 early in the fourth quarter. The Comet defense held Lutcher twice inside the 10 yard line in the final minutes of the game to preserve the win. For the Comets the win even
their district record at 2-2 and upped their overall record to 7-2. The
Comets enter the AAA playoffs next Friday night at home. The Comets will
host Franklinton Demons of 9-3A. The Comets completed the season with a #
11 power ranking while the Demons finished # 22. Leading the Comets on offense in the Lutcher game was the running back tandem of Tyrell Fenroy and Cedric White. Fenroy had 86 yards on 13 carries while White added another 72 yards on 16 carries. Defensively the Comets were
lead by the front line of Chris Cancienne, Alton Alexander, Daniel LeBlanc,
Chase Villeret, Keith Maurin and Kerry Louque. The Comets held
Lutcher out of the end zone on three separate occasions after the Dogs had
moved the ball into the red zone. Several big plays were made in the fourth
quarter. On a fourth and one from the Comet 3 yard line Alton
Alexander halted Bulldog running back Ellis Hughes 6 inches short of
a first down. With about 2 minutes remaining in the fourth
quarter linebacker Jeremiah Johnson intercepted a Lutcher pass at
the goal line to sop another scori9ng threat by the 'dogs. The Lutcher game had some interesting moments and controversial moments as well. Right before the half the Comets lead 10-0 and the Bulldogs drove deep into Comet territory. Quarterback Bryce Matherne threw a pass to tight end Michael Dicharry in the end zone. Dicharry appeared to drop the ball as Comet defensive Kliebert closed in. But the back judge ruled it a catch and after a conference with two other officials the touchdown stood. The play ignited the Comet crowd and seemed to set off a series of questionable calls by the men in striped shirts. In the end the Comets were penalized 13 times for over 125 yards.
