Comets claim 10-3A title
with 33-14 win over Lutcher

The first half of the Comets game against Lutcher Friday night appeared to be headed in the same direction as the Comets 2003 regular season finale against the Bulldogs. The Comets lost that game and had to share the district title with Lutcher and E. D. White. But this is a different year with different teams and thanks to second half domination by the Comets this game followed a much different script.

The Comets rallied from a 14-6 halftime deficit outscoring Lutcher 27-0 in the second half in a solid 33-14 win over the Bulldogs in Lutcher Friday night. The victory was sweet for Comet fans and players who stormed the field after the game to celebrate as the Comets claimed the "undisputed" 10 AAA district championship.

The Comets now look forward to trying the reverse their recent playoff fortunes Friday night hosting one of the top teams in the state- the Patterson Lumberjacks.

Friday's game in Lutcher started off slow for the Comets who only had the ball for 6 minutes the entire first half. The Comets punted on their first possession but it would be their only punt of the night. On their second possession the Comets drove 88 yards on 9 plays and scored on a 17 yard pass play from Jesse Martin to Matt Sutton. The PAT was no good and the Comet trailed 7-6.

The Comets trailed 14-6 at the half but early in the third quarter things began to turn in their favor. The Comets received the second half kickoff and would proceed to score on 4 of their 5 second half possessions. The first drive was 66 yards in 8 plays with Tyrell Fenroy scoring the first of his three touchdowns on a 2 yard run.THe two point try failed and the Comet trailed 14-12.

On Lutcher's next possession Comet defensive back Darin Helm picked off a Bulldog pass and put the Comet offense back in business. This time the Comets marched 88 yard in 9 plays with Fenroy going in form 7 yards out. The two point play worked with Jesse Martin completing the pass to Matt Sutton to put the Comets on top 20-14.

Casey Robottom's 17 yard punt return put the Comets deep in Bulldog territory on their next possession. Four plays later Jesse Martin connected with Matt Sutton on a 22 yard touchdown play. This time the two point play failed and the Comets lead was 26-14.

The Comets final touchdown drive came just moments later after the defense forced Lutcher to go three and out. It took the Comets only 4 plays to go 46 yards with Fenroy scoring from 17 yards out. Sellars PAT put the Comets on top 33-14.

Lutcher had one more scoring threat but the Comet defense held the Bulldogs out of the end zone after they had a first and goal form the Comet nine yard line. The Comet offense took over on downs and killed the remaining 6:21 of the game moving the ball deep into Bulldog territory before taking a knee to end the game.

Tyrell Fenroy rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Comet offense. Jesse Martin completed 9 of 12 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Sutton had 4 catches for 51 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Comets did not commit one turnover.

The game marked the end of an era for the Comets who will be participating in AA next year while Lutcher will remain in AAA. The two teams have played each other 14 times since 1989 with both teams wining seven times. The series will likely be on hold for at least the next two years due to the reclassification.
