Comets dream season ends in quarterfinal loss to Lutcher
After two playoff games in which the Comets played at a very high level handily defeating Patterson and Benton, they could not make it three in a row. Instead the Comets became the victim as district and River Parish rival Lutcher played perhaps their best game of the season and in doing so eliminated the Comets from the playoffs for the second year in a row. The oddity of the final score 33-23 in favor of the Bulldogs perhaps reflected the oddity of the game which on several occasions appeared to be headed to a one-sided Lutcher win only to see the Comets battle back to make a game of it. But in the end the Comets ran out of time and points and their dream of reaching the Superdome and the state finals came to a disappointing end. By winning the battle of time of possession the Buldogs were successful in limiting the number of snaps for the Comets high powered offense which resulted in only 23 points despite 400 yards of total offense. The Comets held the Bulldogs on their first possession after they took the opening kickoff and moved inside the Comets five yard line. The Comets then took off on a 97 yard drive but had to settle for a 21 yard Ben Sellars field goal and a 3-0 lead. Lutcher would score 14 unanswered points before the Comets could get on the scoreboard again. Tyrell Fenroy's two yard run cut the lead to 14-9 but the two point conversion failed. In one of the biggest plays of the game Carlos Brown of Lutcher took the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown with only 37 seconds remaining in the half. This put the Bulldogs up 20-9 at the half and put the Comets in catch-up mode for the rest of the game as the Comets could not get any closer than two scores in the final two quarters. The most exciting play of the second half came on a 88 yard touchdown pass from Jesse Martin to Matt Sutton which made the score 27-16 in favor of the Bulldogs. But Lutcher scored again before another Martin touchdown pass, this one 27 yards to Fenroy, made the final 33-23. The game marked the end of the careers for two of the most prolific offensive players in Comet football history. Tyrell Fenroy rushed for 161 yards on just 17 attempts to raise his season totals to 2176 yards and 39 rushing touchdowns. Fenroy also scored on a pass reception his fourth of the year. Fenroy finshed his career with over 4,000 yards rushing. Quarterback Jesse Martin completed 15 of 27 passes for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns to raise his season totals to 1750 yards passing and 24 touchdowns. Martin passed for over 3500 yards during his career. The Comets final record of 11-2 was the one of the best in Comet football history. It was also the first time that the Comets had reached as far as the quarterfinals as a memer of 3A.
