Comets open playoffs with 42-14 win over Patterson An explosive offense, a "bend but don't' break" defense and stellar special team play resulted in a convincing 42-14 win for the Comets over the Patterson Lumberjacks in the 3A bi-district playoffs last Friday night in LaPlace. The Comets now travel to north Louisiana to face the undefeated Benton Tigers the number 2 seeded team in the state playoffs. The Comet-Patterson game was featured on Cox Sports Television and carried all over the gulf south stretching from as far west as Texas and all the way east into the state of Florida. The TV timeouts and a total 20 penalties against the two teams made for a long game that took almost three hours to complete. But with the Comets in the lead for the entire game, the Comet fans just had more time to celebrate the Comets first playoff win in nearly seven years. Tyrell Fenroy seized the opportunity against a gambling Patterson defense with 265 all purpose yards and four touchdowns. All four of Fenroy's scores came in the first half as the Comets built a 28-6 lead at the half. Fenroy finished the night with 215 yards rushing with touchdown runs of 19,9 and 57 yards. Fenroy had a 50 yard pass reception that went for a touchdown late in the second quarter. He raised his season totals to 1819 yards rushing and 38 touchdowns. Fenroy was able to get free into the Lumberjack secondary most of the night thanks to the blocking by the Comet offensive line - one that faced an eight and nine man defensive front most of the game. The lineman who played in most of the game were Adam Faucheux, Andy Guidry, Chris Waguespack, Tommy Weber, Mark Murphy and tight end Bryan Matus. When Fenroy wasn't doing his thing on offense the Comet defense was making big play after big play facing one of the best quarterbacks in the state Brock Landry of Patterson. Landry who is expected to play college football completed 20- 42 passes for over 250 yards but was only able to get two touchdown passes and one came late when the game was already well in hand for the Comets. Jared Nowell, Matt Heltz, David Rollo, and Garrad Lodrigues all made big plays throughout the night that stopped Lumberjack drives. Twice the Lumberjacks got into the red zone and came up with no points. Roland Ricca had a big night for the Comets on defense as well as on special teams. Michael Troglen teamed up with Ricca to make big plays for the Comets. The rest of the Comet defensive players who played in the game were linebackers Brody Leake and Alex Vicknair, lineman Mark Murphy , Nick Miller, Kerry Louque and defensive back Darin Helm. Quarterback Jesse Martin attempted only 7 passes in the game completing 4 for 74 yards and one touchdown. Casey Robottom was on the receiving end of Martin's touchdown pass for 12 yards early in the third quarter. Jarvis Sanders scored the Comets last touchdown on a 19 yard run late in the game. Ben Sellars kicked all six extra points. Garrad Lodrigues had a good night punting pinning the Lumberjacks deep in their own territory. Matt Sutton forced a fumble on one of Lodrigues' punts which was recovered by Michael Troglen. The Comets now look to advance in the playoffs Friday night on the road at Benton. The Benton Tigers are one of the best teams in the state. They have defeated four 4A teams en route to posting an 11-0 record so far. They have defeated district foe Mansfield twice once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. The Tigers possess size, strength, speed and power and will be the Comets toughest assignment of the season especially traveling to face them on their home turf.
