Overtime Game
Comets defeat St. James 27-26
Four quarters and over two and
one-half hours of football did not determine the outcome of a very
important 10-AAA game last Friday between the Comets of St. Charles and
the Wildcats of St James. But a short 10 yard game, which lasted about 5
minutes including several timeouts, did decide and it was the Comets who
prevailed outscoring St. James 7-6 to claim a huge 27-26 win over the
Wildcats. With the win the Comets moved their district record to 2-0 and
overall record to 7-0.
The Wildcats won the toss for overtime and chose to go on defense.
The Comet offense scored on a three yard bootleg run by quarterback Jason
Waguespack who outran Wildcat defenders to the corner of the endzone.
Waguespack then added the very important PAT and the Comet led 27-20. St.
James battled back and scored on a fourth down pass play form Blake
Falgoust to Wendall Octave from 7 yards out. The Wildcats decided to go
for two points and the win. Falgoust launched a pass high in the direction
of Octave but Comet defensive back John Howard batted the ball down
securing the win for the Comets.
The game represented a series of highs and lows for the Comets who
had to battle from behind in the score for the first time this season. It
was the Comet defense that made big plays following offensive miscues
that saved the day for the Comets. The Comets turned the ball over 4 times
all in their own territory. While the Wildcats did cash in twice for
touchdowns, two other times after turnovers they loss yards and did
not score any points.
Offensively the Comets, had two very long drives for touchdowns. The
first one came at the end of the half with the Comets trailing 12-7. Following
a punt that rolled dead on the 4 yard line the Comets took over with only
3:37 left in the half. The Comets marched the length of the field on 10
plays and scored on a 23 yard slant pass from Waguespack to John Bordelon.
A two point try failed and and the Comets held a 13-12 halftime
lead.
On the second play of the second half the Comets fumbled deep in
their own territory. St James scored on a fourth down 20 yard pass play
from Falgoust to tight end Sutherland. The Wildcats made the two points on
a reverse with Octave diving in over two Comet defenders.
Later on in the 3rd quarter the Comets had perhaps their most important
offensive drive of the year. Taking over on their own 12 yard line
following an interception by Jerry Gair, the Comets drove the length of
the field on 17 plays to score the tying touchdown. Three times the Comets
converted on third down to keep the drive alive. The touchdown came on
a 7 yard pass from Waguespack to Bordelon. Waguespack's PAT made the
score 20-20. The Comets had more opportunities in regulation but could not
convert them into points.
Statistically, the Comet defense held the Wildcats to 48 yards
rushing with 45 yards coming in the first half. The Comets out gained the
Wildcats 295-208 in total offense but committed four turnovers. Waguespack
competed 20-31 passes for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Comets had two interceptions and several big sacks on defense.
But the the two biggest plays were made by defensive back John Howard who
stopped two Wildcat two point tries including the last one in
overtime.
The Comets have little time to celebrate as they face a
hungry and dangerous Donaldsonville team on the road Friday. Kickoff is at
7 p.m.
