Comets rally falls short
in 25-20 loss to St. James

In athletics the difference between victory and defeat can literally come down to a matter of inches. That's exactly what happened in the Comets 25-20 loss to the St .James Wildcats Friday night.

Trailing 25-20 with only 20 seconds left in the game,  the Comets moved the ball to the Wildcat 6 yard line on a 50 yard pass completion from Jeremy Catoire to Jamall Singleton. After a spiked ball to stop the clock, Catoire connected with Singleton again this time on a screen pass. Singleton  was tackled inside the one yard line as time expired and the Wildcats had held off a furious second half rally by the Comets that saw them  outscore St James by a score of 20-0 and out gaining the Wildcats by over 100 yards.

St James came into the game the number 3 ranked AAA team in  the state and had wins winners over AAA powers  Parkview and Amite. It  looked like they would have their way with the Comets building a 25-0 halftime lead. The Wildcats jumped out to a 12-0 lead on a 68 yard touchdown pass and a  95 yard fumble recovery and return. More Comet miscues led to points as a fumble inside the Comets 20 yard line set-up the third Wildcat score. With about 3 minutes to go in the half the Wildcats marched 85 yards for what would be their final score of the game.

The second half started off with the big play the Comets needed as Tyrell Fenroy returned the kickoff 85 yards a for a touchdown. Moments later Jamall Singleton blocked a punt which led to another Comet touchdown. Rod Remondet ran in from 6 yards on a trap play and Ben Sellars second PAT narrowed the score to 25-14  in the 3rd quarter.

Midway in the fourth quarter, the Comets mounted 13 play 64 yard drive that concluded with a 9 yard touchdown pass from Catoire to Brian Huber. The Comet tried for two points but the pass play failed leaving the score 25-20 with 2:38 remaining tin the game.

After a failed onsides kick attempt, the Comet defense stopped St James on three plays and forced a punt. The punt only traveled 9 yards setting up the Comets final attempt to pull out a victory. Catoire connected with Singleton on a crossing pattern and Singleton went down at the 6 yard line setting up the games final play.
