The
Comets rallied for 20 points in the second half against St.
James, one of the perennial powers in AAA in the state of Louisiana.
But it was just not enough to pull off the upset as the Wildcats
held on to a 27-20 win in St. James last Friday night. The game
left the Comets 0-2 in 9-AAA while the Wildcats improved to 1-1.
Once again the
Comets struggled against a Wing-T offense as the Wildcats amassed
nearly 400yards in total offense including 230 yards passing.
Several times the Comets forced St. James into 3rd and 4th and
long but gave up big pass plays to the Wildcats. Receiver Davon
Dennis came up with clutch catches that hurt the Comets in crucial
situations.
Early on in the
game it was the St. James offense that controlled the ball.
In the second quarter the Wildcats went on top by a score of
13-0. St. Charles had two first half scoring opportunities but did
not convert them into touchdowns. The first came in the second
quarter when Chris Cancienne blocked a Wildcat punt deep in St. James
territory. But several plays plays later on 3rd and 1 from
the Wildcat 16 a high snap sailed over Jason Waguespack's
head. The Comets recovered but lost 25 yards and had to punt the
ball to St. James. On the last play of the half, the Comets sacked
the Wildcat quarterback Chris Hymel who fumbled. But the Comets
were unable to scoop up the ball and run to the endzone and the clock
expired as on the play.
The second half
opened with the Comet offense coming to life. A 89 yard drive as
capped off with a 12 yard touchdown run by Todd Babin. After the
PAT made the score 13-7, Dennis returned the ensuing kick 60
yards into Comet territory. The Wildcats marched down the field
and scored to lead 21-7.
Midway through the
fourth quarter the Comet offense got rolling again. Jason
Waguespack passed to Randy Madere for 13 yards and a touchdown to
trim the Wildcat lead to 21-14. But the Wildcats answered again to
take a 27-14 lead with less than 2 minutes in the game.
St. Charles drove
67 yards in just four plays with Waguespack hitting Madere on a 19
yard TD pass. The PAT failed and St. James held on for a 27-20
lead. The onsides kick attempt by the Comets was recovered by St. James.
The Wildcats ran out the clock to preserve the win.
The Comets return
home to face the Donaldsonville Tigers next Friday at Dupuy stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Comet senior athletes will be
honored at the game.
