Defense dominates in Comets 10-0 shutout of St. James The Comet defense rose to the occasion Friday night making big play after big play in helping the Comets defeat a very physical and speedy St. James Wildcat team 10-0 on a rain soaked field in LaPlace. The game had a total of 7 turnovers, two blocked punts and several missed scoring opportunities for both teams. It was a game that the Comets could have won by two or more touchdowns. But also one that they could have lost. The game started on a high note for the Comets as quarterback Jesse martin connected with Matt Sutton on a 58 yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. The Comets had another scoring opportunity after the Comet defense forced a punt holding the 'cats to 3 yards in three plays. But the Comets committed the games first turnover fumbling the ball at the Wildcat 32 yard line. St. James went on an 11 play drive and faced a fourth and nine at the Comets 22 yard line. Jared Nowell intercepted a pass for the Comets and returned it 40 yards to midfield. Later in the second quarter the Wildcats had another long drive this time 10 plays taking the ball to the 24 yard line. After a fourth down pass fell incomplete, the Comets killed the clock to take a 7-0 lead at half. Early in the second half the Wildcats had their best scoring opportunity following a blocked punt. But the Comet defense stiffened inside the five yard line as Jared Nowell broke up a fourth down pass attempt on the goal line . The Comets used two big pass plays to move the ball in scoring position. Martin hit Robottom for 35 yards and Matt Sutton for 38 yards. But Martin's pass on a second and seven from the Wildcat 22 was intercepted by Daneiro Robiske to halt the drive. Brody Leake intercepted a pass deep in Wildcat territory early in the fourth quarter. Three plays netted 8 yards so the Comet decided to go for the field goal Ben Sellars connected on a 26 yard field goal to make the score 10-0. St. James would threaten to score one more time midway through the fourth quarter. Facing a third and ten from the Comet 23, a Nick Narcisse pass was intercepted by David Rollo at the goal line. The Comets offense then killed most of the remaining 6:17 left in the game driving the ball to the Wildcat 33 before turning the ball over on downs. One last St. James pass attempt fell incomplete as the horn sounded to end the game. The Comets host the Assumption Mustangs Friday night in LaPlace.
