Season Opener
Comets Stun St. Paul 35-20
The Comets offense didn't
wait very long to get rolling as the 2001 season opened Friday night in
Covington against the St. Paul Wolves. The offense scored on three of its
first four possessions and amassed over 300 total yards as the
Comets went on to to claim a 35-20 win over the big and physical 5-A
Wolves.
The Comets defense intercepted three passes in the game with Anthony Jacob,
Jerry Gair, and Derek Mayeux each getting one pic to halt St. Paul scoring
drives.
The Comets offense rolled on its second
possession with quarterback Jason Waguespack completing 4 straight passes
with a big one going to John Bordelon for 18 yards to the 5 yard
line.Shane Waite swept around left end for the first touchdown and Waguespack's
PAT gave SCC a 7-0 lead. St Paul answered with a nice 70 yard drive and
tied the score at 7.
On the next possession the Comets offense rolled deep into
Wolve territory with Waguespack
scoring on a 14 yard run. The 14-7 lead did not last long as St Paul once
again answered scoring with 2 minutes left in the half to tie the game at
14.
The Comet two minute offense went to work and marched down
the field with passing and running led by Waguespack. This time Waguespack
connected with wide receiver Matt Boucvalt who danced in from 9 yards out
on a screen play. The Comet led 21-14 at the half.
St. Paul took the second half kickoff and marched 65 yards
for a score. The drive was aided by 45 yards in penalties and narrowed the
Comets lead to 21-20. But the Comet offense did not take long to get
rolling again this time marching 70 yards with Waguespack connecting with
Boucvalt again this time for 14 yards and another touchdown. Waguespack's
PAT gave the Comets a 28-20 lead.
The Comet defense which had struggled early in the game
turned up the heat in the second half as Anthony Jacob intercepted a St. Paul
pass to give the Comet offense another scoring opportunity. It was the
Waguespack-Boucvalt connection that clicked again this time for 6 yards
and another touchdown. The PAT put the Comets on top 35-20.
Jerry Gair and Derek Mayeux's interceptions closed the door on St Paul's
final two drives and
sealed the Wolves fate.
Waguespack was 15-19 for 238 yards and three touchdown passes
and scored once on a 14 yard run. Matt Boucvalt had 8 receptions for 111
yards and three scores.
The Comets will begin a four game home stand next week
hosting Grace King at Dupuy stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
