The Comets capitalized on key special team plays and a stingy defense to post a 17-0 shutout win over the St. Paul Wolves Friday night in Laplace. Heavy rains from two tropical storms dumped over 2 inches of rain on the Comet field Friday, but it did not seem to bother the Comets who posted their second straight win over 5-A Wolves from Covington.. The win gives the Comets a 1-0 record and nice start in the power point rankings for the state playoffs. The Comets had great field position
in the first half playing most of the half in St. Paul territory. Ben
Sellars connected on a 26 yard field goal midway through the first quarter
in what would be the only points of the first half. The field goal was
set-up by a 34 yard run by Tyrell Fenroy on the Comets first play from
scrimmage. The Comets had other scoring opportunities but could not get
into the end zone. The Comet defense held St Paul to only 3 first downs in
the first half. The second half started off on a good note as the Comets received the kickoff and drove 70 yards in 8 plays for the game's first touchdown. Tyrell Fenroy raced around left end 36 yards to move the ball into St Paul territory. Quarterback Jeremy Catoire connected with receiver Jamall Singleton on a 8 yard scoring pass. Singleton took in the screen pass on the 8 yard line and made a nice run into the end zone for the Comets. Ben Sellars added the PAT and the Comets held a 10-0 lead early in the 3rd quarter. The Comet defense withstood every challenge from St Paul and had 8 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for minus 39 yards in losses. The Comet defense also sacked St Paul quarterback 3 times for 19 more yards of losses. With time running out in the fourth quarter, Lee Kliebert picked off a St Paul pass and returned it 30 yards down to the 5 yard line. Three plays later Catoire scored on a one yard sneak. Sellars added the PAT to make the final score 17-0. Daniel LeBlanc provided big plays on special teams with his punting. It was LeBlanc's 61 yard punt that was downed at the St Paul one yard line that put the the Wolves backs against the wall late in the game. Leading the Comets offensive attack was sophomore running back Tyrell Fenroy who had 107 yards rushing on 22 carries. Jamall Singleton had 3 catches for 32 yards and one touchdown. Chris Cancienne had 7 solo tackles and 2 assists to lead the Comet defense. The Comets allowed only 85 yards total offense in the game. Senior fullback Rod Remondet was injured in the game. The extent of his injury is unknown at this time. The Comets will host Grace King next Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Dupuy stadium |
