Comets Defeat West St. John

The Comets capitalized on 4 turnovers and defeated the West St. John Rams 18-6 in the annual River Parishes Jamboree in Hahnville last Friday night.  For the Comets,  it was the first win in the jamboree since 1996 when they defeated Lutcher 8-7.

The Comets intercepted three passes including two by Anthony Jacob and one by Derrick Gaubert. John Howard recovered a fumble on a punt. Jason Waguespack connected with John Bordelon on two touchdowns passes. Waguespack also booted a 39 yard field goal in the first half. 

The Comets offense rolled on its second possession when Todd Babin raced 73 yards on a screen pass to the the Ram 4 yard line. Two plays later Waguespack connected with Bordelon on a 6 yard scoring pass with10: 05 left in the half. Rod Remondet ran it in for 2 points on the conversion to give SCC a 8-0 lead. West St John scored on a 36 reverse by Thomas  Augusta. Comet defensive back Jerry Gair broke up the two point try and the Comets led 8-6. Waguespack's field goal put the Comets up 11-6 at the half. The Comets botched more scoring opportunities and had another Waguespack to Bordelon touchdown called back because of a penalty.

John Howard's recovery of a fumbled punt put the Comets in business on the Ram 9  yard line. After a loss on first down, Waguespack connected with Bordelon on a 13 yard scoring pass and booted the PAT to put the Comets up 18-6. Waguespack ended the  night with 107 yards passing and two touchdowns.

The Comets open the regular season this Friday night against the powerful 5-A St. Paul Wolves in Covington. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
