Comets rally for 20-14 Jamboree win over WSJ

The Comets scored the winning touchdown with only 31 seconds remaining to claim their second straight jamboree win over AA power West St. John. Trailing 6-0 at the half, the Comets rallied for 20 second half points and were able to hold off the Rams who attempted a  pass in the end zone on the games final pay. The game kicked off the annual River Parishes jamboree at Hahnville Thursday night.

In the first half the comets could not capitalize on good field position set up by the punting of Daniel LeBlanc and stingy defense by the Comets. The Rams scored on a long drive that ended on a 23 yard touchdown run back Initius Howard reversing field on a toss play. The two point try failed and with 4:33 left in the half the Rams led 6-0.

In the second half the Comets got on the scoreboard when Jeremy Catoire hit Matt Sutton on a post play form 17 yards out. A two point try failed and the game was tied at 6. It did not take the Rams long to take the lead as they answered the Comets scoring drive with one  of their own. Quarterback Randall Nicholson tossed a scoring strike to Sandy Harris. This time the two point try succeeded and the Rams held a 14-6 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Comets got an electrifying 85 yard kickoff return from sophomore Tyrell Fenroy who out-raced Ram defenders down the left sideline. Another two-point try failed for the Comets and the Rams held on to a slim 14-12 lead. With only three minutes left in the game, the Comets mounted a 64 yard, 11 play drive that resulted in the winning touchdown. With only 31 seconds left in the game, quarterback Jeremy Catoire recovered form a bad snap in time to hit receiver Chase Grob on a 23 yard touchdown pass. Grob caught the ball at the two and dove into the end ozone with the winning score. On the two point try the Comets finally succeeded with Grob making a great catch of a Tyrell Fenroy pass on the halfback option pass.

The Rams made the last few seconds interesting with a pass into the endzone on the game's final play. Defensive back Mike Pecoraro broke up the pass and the Comets preserved the win. The Comet defense was sparked by the play of linebacker Jonathan Schexnayder, tackle Daniel LeBlanc, and cornerback and Reid Owens.

The Comets open the 2002 regular season against 5-A St Paul Wolves Friday night in Dupuy stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
