Offensive explosion leaves Comets with loss to WSJ
There was an offensive explosion in Edgard Friday night and unfortunately for the Comets it was the West St. John Rams who ended up with the better numbers. The Rams won the game 68-45 and piled up nearly 600 yards total offense. The Comets did total over 400 yards offense but committed 4 turnovers while the Rams did not commit one turnover. While the turnovers were costly for the Comets it was what happened on fourth down that probably sealed the Comets fate. Twice the Comets were stopped on key fourth down conversions in the game once inside the Rams ten yard line. But perhaps the biggest mistakes in the game came on fourth down punting situations after the Comet defense had stopped the potent Ram offense. In the first half the Comets roughed the punter after having pinned the Rams back deep in their own territory with a 4th and 17 to go. The roughing penalty gave the Rams new life with an automatic first down. The real backbreaker came in the fourth quarter when the Comets were caught with 12 men on the field on a 4th and 16 play. The Rams scored on the next play to break the game open. West St. John running back Patrick Jackson had a career best 309 yards on 32 attempts and 5 rushing touchdowns. He scored one more touchdown on a 25 yard pass reception. Comet running back Tyrell Fenroy also had a stellar performance with 200 yards rushing on 20 carries. He scored three rushing touchdowns on runs of 67, 21, and 49 yards and one on a 21 yard pass reception to raise his season total to 24. The Comets were slow out of the gate and found themselves on the short end of a 14-0 score only 4 minutes into the game. The Rams had the opportunity to make it more but squandered the opportunity after recovering a fumbled kickoff return by the Comets. Tyrell Fenroy scored on a 67 yard run which began a momentum swing in the Comets favor midway through the first quarter. The Comets would score two more touchdowns and take a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter. Jesse Martin connected with Casey Robottom on a 55 yard scoring strike and also hit Jarvis Sanders on a 9 yard touchdown pass. Jackson's 21 yard touchdown run cut the Comets lead to 21-20. Tyrell Fenroy scored on a 21 yard screen pass and the Comets went ahead 27-20. Jackson answered again this time on a 71 yard run. His two point conversion run put the Rams on top 28-27. The Comet then drove into Rams territory with under a minute left in the half. Ben Sellars connected on a 30 yard field goal with only 5 seconds left in the half giving the Comets a 30-28 lead. The second half was dominated by the Rams especially in the fourth quarter when they scored 32 points. The Comets did cut into the lead late in the game once trailing 52-37 but two failed onsides kicks ended any hopes of a last minute miracle. The Comets begin 10-AAA competition next week hosting St. James.
