Cindy Deroche memorialized at school mass

Many of us probably remember her as the smiling face in the office. Ms. Cindy came to SCC as a parent in 1987 when her daughter Kim (91) started here. Kim was followed by her sister Melissa (92) and then by Bret (2001), the youngest of the family. Ms. Cindy was always volunteering and willing to help. In 1993, she began working in the office and bacame a permanent member of SCC's family.

In 1989 Cindy was diagnosed with cancer. It was a battle that she would fight for the next 20 years. If you knew Ms. Cindy, and yet did not know of her battle, you were not alone. Cindy never complained and only spoke of her condition when she thought it would help others as encouragement or a form of reassurance in a battle they were facing. She NEVER thought of herself as being sick and you were not allowed to either. Even when the pain was at its worse she never said anything and came to work with a smile. Although many interacted with her on a daily basis few were aware of truly how much pain she was in and how for advanced the condition had gotten.

If she could, she would deny all this and say that it is unwarranted and unnecessary. She would probably say that she did not do anything special or anything different from anyone else. However, on this one rare occasion, she would be wrong. Cynthia Weaver Deroche's life spoke volumes, not just by what she accomplished, but mostly by the way she lead her life. We have always heard the expression "Angels on Earth", and I'm sure we have all met many without even realizing it, but she was an angel on earth in just about every facet. She was someone who ALWAYS gave and never asked for anything in return. She never fad a harsh or unkind word to say about anyone. She looked for and always saw something good in everyone and it every situation. During her battle she never questioned why me, why not someone else. She figured God had a plan and no matter what that was she would accept it. Ultimately she faced it just like she did everything else, with a smile. Her trust and faith in God was limitless. Cindy truly tried to live her life as Christ would and that is a lesson from her we could all learn.

Ms. Cindy only had one mood- HAPPY and one facial expression- A SMILE. Ther are many things that we can learn from the life that she lead, but the one thing that tends to always come to mind is how she faced every good and bad situation- with a smile. She was proof that by doing this you can face even difficult situations with a positive attitude. It is a lesson we should all try to follow. Cindy was truly beautiful inside and out, and the life she lead was a remarkable example for all who met her. We hope that the new plaque will not only help us to remember a truly extraordinary person, but to remind us of a lesson for all of us to follow, "FACE EVERY SITUATION WITH A SMILE." So when you see the plaque, do not feel sad, but smile and know that Cindy is smiling down on all of us.
