Comets take stand in "March for Life"
In 2003 23.9 % of all pregnancies nationwide ended in abortion. Taking a stand against Roe vs. Wade court decision that allowed for legal abortions were eight St. Charles Catholic High School students who marched up Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., in protest.
Accompanied by Religion Coordinator Elena Gabb and Director of Development Marie Ory, these students learned about the issues surrounding abortions as well as the overall dignity of life.
The pilgrimage began with a tour of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. While moving in its own way, the exhibits inspired the students who would later be marching for the very issues that the museum represented.
“To see the culture of death rising in our world made each of us yearn for change,” Gabb said. “Touring that museum helped each of us grasp the reality of our nation’s need for change.”
Continuing on their journey for change in the world, the Comets visited the Pope John Paul II cultural center to explore their faith and learn about the role of faith in their lives. The exhibits of the center were flanked with images and inspirational quotes from John Paul’s reign as pope.
“Walking down a ramp to the first floor there were brass molded hands from Catholics around the world and underneath their hands a quote about their faith,” Katrina Cupit said. “It was very inspiring to see as a catholic that so many people have such strong faith.”
Preparing to march for the dignity of life Comets attended the right to life mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This affirmation of Mary’s yes to God gave insight into the true meaning of the march. Surrounded by thousands of other Catholics coming together for the same cause, the students participated in a reverent celebration of the Eucharist.
“On march for life, I learned to really respect the life of others. I felt like I made a difference in the world because I was able to stand up for what I believe in.” Shelby Bourgeois said.
After touring museums and the National Archives, the Comets prepared for the 35th annual March for Life on January 22, 2008. Beginning the March day, the students participated in a rally on the Mall, followed by the march to the Supreme Court, and then a meeting with representatives from Louisiana, including Senator David Vitter and Congressman Charles Boustany.
